SURGERY

College Station Cat Clinic provides a wide variety of surgical procedures ranging
from routine neutering to more advanced orthopedic and soft tissue procedures.
We schedule procedures Monday through Friday at our hospital. We encourage
our clients to check their cats in the morning of surgery to allow time for pre-
anesthetic blood testing and identify any potential risk prior to the procedure.
Each cat receives a pre-anesthetic sedative approximately 30 minutes prior to
anesthesia and the start of the procedure.

What Happens During a Surgery?

  • Pre-op blood testing for increased patient safety.
  • A screening electrocardiogram (ECG) for increased patient safety.
  • IV catheter and IV fluids to speed recovery and increase patient safety in older cats.
  • State-of-the-art anesthesia, using a combination of injectable and general anesthesia (Isoflurane) via an endotracheal tube.
  • Sterile procedures are followed during the surgery. The surgeon will be dressed in a sterile gown and mask to minimize the risk for infection. Sterile drape material is used over and around the surgical site and sterile instruments are provided depending on the type of the procedure. It is not uncommon to open 5-8 special instrument packs for orthopedic or advanced abdominal procedures.
  • Individual patient monitoring by 1-2 trained veterinary nurses/technicians, during surgery and in recovery.
  • Nutrition, fresh water, clean bedding, and lots of TLC.
  • Post-operative pain relief
  • Return visits for re-check or suture removal, if required.

A word on Pain Management – In the past, pain management was largely overlooked in veterinary medicine. Why, we could never understand? However, current scientific thinking fully agrees with us that pain is just as real and just as serious for animals as it is for humans.

At College Station Cat Clinic, we include pain control medications for all invasive surgical procedures. Pain control medications can be administered by injection, by pill, by liquid, or by means of a transdermal skin patch.
